2005

Where It Started

Barastone was founded in 2005 by a team of investors and entrepreneurs focused on a specific challenge: increasing liquidity, reducing risk, and instituting capital controls for investment portfolios.

The company that grew from those early discussions developed technology and strategy for family offices and institutional investors—a risk-based, risk-controlled approach to improving investment performance.

That work brought our team into contact with an emerging opportunity: the massive concentration of wealth locked inside American homes—and the inefficient tools available to access it.

2010s

Becoming HEI Specialists

We became one of the first specialists in home equity investments—a category so new it barely had a name.

We brokered for the industry's major providers, gaining intimate knowledge of origination, underwriting, and servicing. We built custom investment solutions for family offices and institutional capital, understanding what deployers of capital actually needed.

This dual vantage point—operating on both sides of every transaction—gave us a perspective few others could claim. We watched this revolutionary financial instrument evolve from niche product to institutional interest to the beginnings of securitization.

What We Learned

Fifteen years in this industry taught us something important: the friction holding back mass adoption wasn't about the product itself. Home equity investments are genuinely revolutionary—a debt-free way for homeowners to access wealth, a new asset class for institutions.

The friction was about everything else.

Homeowners don't understand it. Financial professionals can't explain it. Investors can't access it efficiently. Regulators are still learning it. The infrastructure simply didn't exist to make this asset class scale.

So we built it.
